Spoken Word
The Texas School Public Relations Association has contracted with Houston-based Spoken Word Communications to provide the next generation of media and crisis communications training to our members. Spoken Word Communications teaches techniques that build confidence and credibility when communicating, ensuring that the message you set out to deliver is received by your audience. Whether it’s taking questions from the media, responding to crisis situations or simply giving presentations, Spoken Word’s critiques of participants’ performance in true-to-life practice scenarios build skills and the experience necessary to guarantee assured performance when the real situation arises.
TSPRA partners with Spoken Word to host training sessions across the state. We offer sessions on Media/Crisis Communications, Handling an Angry Public and Powerful Presentations. These are usually full-day events usually held from 8:00 a.m. to 4:00 p.m. Each training requires a minimum number of participants by the deadline to sign up. The price for training session is $300 per person, with discounts available for the host site. Districts and organizations can schedule a Spoken Word training for just their employees or open them up to others in TSPRA and their communities.
There are no cancellations for these events. Participants may send someone in their place if they can not attend.

This full-day training centers around three principles: Preparation, Pitfalls, and Powerful Messages. Through a sharing of ideas, multiple on-camera interviews, and a review of past examples of education-related public domain clips, participants will walk away with the skills needed to have a successful experience whether it’s promoting a new initiative or putting a compassionate face on the district after an incident with off-campus impact or injuries. Fifteen participants will get “on-camera” experience during this workshop.

Being able to communicate effectively is critical, especially in front of an audience who might be angry or skeptical. Our Handling an Angry Public Training helps participants learn to address sensitive information and respond to concerns about information that might be highly sensitive or emotional.
This half-day session offers participant techniques to reduce anger while dealing with individuals who are upset with your district. Through multiple on-camera interactions, participants will learn how to effectively respond when confronted with angry parents or citizens. This session will give participants the competence and confidence needed to deal with encounters from verbally abusive, aggressive and angry individuals.
The training will provide participants with several opportunities to “practice” their delivery. These simulations will be videotaped and critiqued as a group in order to provide maximized learning opportunities.
Training must be booked as two half-day sessions on the same day.
