2024 Rookie Of The Year
Stephanie Lyssy, Santa Fe ISD
Stephanie Lyssy joined the Santa Fe ISD Communications Department in June 2022. She is a department of 1.5 employees.
In that time, Stephanie has produced the district’s first annual magazine in September 2022 and second annual magazine in September 2023. She started a new broadcast called “Teaching on a Tuesday” where she posted a video of a teacher teaching a lesson to show what is happening inside the classrooms. She created a “Love the Bus” campaign and solicited “shout-outs” from parents about district bus drivers. She created a campaign for Assistant Principal week where she interviewed each AP and shadowed them, then posted to social media to highlight them. She created and produced the district’s Superintendent’s podcast, “Recess with Dr. Bott”. She worked tirelessly to promote the district Facebook page, which reached 10,000 followers! She created a new SFISD logo and was instrumental in launching the district’s new website. She helped to communicate district facts for their bond package in November. She hosted two realtor luncheons, “Real Talk with Realtors”, and two “Senior Warrior” (65+ community members) meetings sharing information about the district and building community partnerships.

2024 Bright Idea Award
Brittany Blanchard, Alvin ISD
Brittany Blanchard had a truly bright idea! While it’s small enough to fit in your pocket, the Alvin ISD “Smile!” card has been a game changer for how the district can connect parents and stakeholders to our picture-sharing platforms, including social media and Flickr.
While the idea is simple, a brightly-colored reminder the size of a business card that highlights where people can find the pictures taken of them while they are out at district events, the potential impact on how we communicate with stakeholders is huge. With these cards, Alvin ISD is able to highlight their district photography, promote their social media and make connections with community members.

2024 Partner in Public Education Award
Texas Representative Abel Herrero
Texas Representative Abel Herrero
For his steadfast support of public education throughout his tenure in the Texas House, and most notably for his courageous, consistent stance and leadership in the fight against vouchers, Representative Abel Herrero has served as a champion of the work that advocates, including the Texas School Public Relations Association, do to celebrate and support more than 5 million students, more than 300,000 teachers, and those who support and love them. While he represents District 34, his advocacy has benefited students statewide.
In April 2023, Representative Herrero filed an amendment to the Texas House budget that would prohibit funding for schools that are not public schools. The bipartisan, 86-52 vote signaled strong opposition to using public dollars for private education. Herrero has steadfastly held this position for at least 10 years and continued to advocate for public schools even as the atmosphere became increasingly polarized.
